16 MORE Hairstyles With a Side Shave – Buns and Stuff

Because we all know you guys only care about my hair. Actually, its pretty much statistically proven. Every day my older post 13 Hairstyles With A Side Shave gets more views than any other post, most days by a long shot. The top search terms that result in a visit to my blog consistently  include the words shave, shaven, shaved, and sideshave. So why fight it.. here’s more of the only thing you (statistically speaking) care about.

As with my previous post, none of these were styled for blog purposes, these were all photos taken whenever I thought to take a picture of my day-to-day hair. I still basically suck at doing hair. I didn’t try to over manicure these; the point of this post is to show what the shaved side looks like, every day, with a variety of hairstyles and a varying levels of fucks given. This set stretches across the summer of 2013; apparently I was having a bun phase.

A bun as big as your head!
A bun as big as your head!

OK, so its not actually as big as your head. The goal that day was to make the bun as big as possible though, without using anything inside it aside from hair. The headband is a piece of sewing notion trim.

The more serious bun.
The more serious bun.

This is basically the same look as the previous one, but on a different day, and with the bun wrapped tight. I think the look is a lot more “no nonsense”, and not necessarily in a good way. I don’t like this as much; honestly I’m not sure what I was thinking.

I kind of really like pigtails, but Thom is always saying they make me look dumpy. Actually, he hasn’t said that for a long time because I generally have stopped doing pigtails to avoid hearing it. Once he told me that pigtails were an “insult to your beautiful hair”. He has also said that the part in the back looks dumpy.. its unclear if he means all people with pigtails look dumpy from the back or that thee’s something about my head or the way I do pigtails that makes that only apply to me. At any rate, this was an experiment to see if I could make not dumpy pigtails. He never said if they were dumpy or not.

Boring, down, and side shave covered.
Boring, down, and side shave covered.

This one is pretty boring and hardly even merits any discussion about it as a hairstyle as its barely a hairstyle. But since I cover the side shave and wear it down fairly often, I thought it dishonest not to include it. The side you are looking at in the first picture is the side with the shave.

Loose side bun.
Loose side bun.

Variations on this side bun are becoming one of my favorite things to do, especially if my hair is dirty, and especially if it was curled the day before. Sometimes I use a ponytail as a base, sometimes I do a looped ponytail. This one I believe is a ponytail, teased and divided in half, with each half of the tail wound the opposite way. More on this later.

The Legolas.
The Legolas.

As I was getting ready on this particular night, I asked myself, “What would Legolas do?” Clearly, this is what he would do. I had also just dyed the striped strip the day before. The colored piece remains present in a lot of the other photos, it just gets covered by the hair pretty easily. The top section is parted off and teased a little bit, then put into a ponytail. A strand of hair is wrapped around it really tightly, and then a bobby pin is jammed into the back/base of the ponytail to make it stand up. I don’t know why I don’t do this more often, I think it looks pretty cool.

Also, do you see how perfect my color looks? Well I couldn’t, and I dyed it red a little while later. Kicking myself in the ass for that now.

Tucked behind the ear like a slob.
Tucked behind the ear like a slob.

This is another one that earns its place only for the sake of realism. Sadly, since theres some body in the ends, I think I tried to style it and it didn’t work out.

Barbarian braids.

Another hairstyle debatably inspired by high fantasy. It was raining that night, and my hair is always somehow both frizzy and flat in the rain. I wanted to distract from that with some random, loose braids. I basically just grabbed pieces and braided them, then pulled on parts of the braids to loosen them up.

The DGF bun.
The DGF bun.

This is what I was referring to when I said that there had been a varying level of fucks given. This is the bun for when I don’t give any. I was either going to work out, or coming back from working out, I’m not sure.

The Con Bun.

Here’s another example of that side bun I like. I’m starting to call it the con bun, because this one was from the second day of Quakecon, and its pretty much perfect for that. By that, I mean any situation in which you will be living like savages, will be somewhere for a long period of time without hair fixing breaks, don’t want to invest time in your hair, and will probably have dirty hair. Its somewhat hard to see in the picture, but it was also cool the way the pink made a subtle starburst in the bun.

The waving bun.

Here’s yet another bun – this one is actually not so much of a style itself as it is a hairstyling device. I wanted to set a bit of wave into it for the next day…

The result.

..And here’s how it turned out. I forgot to take a picture before I left the house, so this is crappy lighting, and I can tell I’d already been sweating some.

Cleopatra fake bangs.

And here’s a beaded headpiece that I made. One night I became inordinately sad that I cannot have baby bangs. (They would stand straight up in places, and my hair is kind of too stringy there to have the kind I’d want.) I came up with this idea as a consolation. It clips on with sewed-in wig clips. I did make one over sight with this design; the way I did this one, I have to cover the side shave and pull down some hair to clip too. I’ve devised a way to make it clip in with the shave exposed, but haven’t made another one yet. I wore this out one night at Pax, even though I’d dyed my hard red by then. It looked more Wonder Woman like with the contrast. In this photo, I think I went to Half Price Books.

Waving iron waves.

I own more than one “waving” iron. This is done with the smaller one. Its a lot like a crimper but the shape of the plates is, obviously, round. When I first bought it circa 2009, I thought it was cool but far too time-consuming to be of much use. Since then I’ve gotten a lot faster at using it. Still though, I don’t usually use it unless I’m going to leave the waves in for two days. It also hides grease pretty well, so thats cool. I have two work out type head bands on. I’ve done the style without them too, but its not the same.

The scarf bun.
The scarf bun.

This is post red dye job. More of the brightness had already come out though; I guess my hair couldn’t hold onto it because its soul is bleached. I had become infatuated with knit hats while in Seattle, but Dallas was still far too hot for them, so I was trying to use a silk scarf as a substitute.

Spinelli IRL.

Ok, so its not Pinterest cute. It finally got cool enough to wear that hat. My side shave is likely going to be covered most of the time for awhile as repeatedly shaving it myself has caused it to get a little out of whack. Its expanded, somewhat unevenly. I’m going to grow it out to and inch or two and then have a hairstylist cut it back in. I also am trying to scrub as much red out as possible. I don’t really know why, but I just don’t really like it. I had red hair for a long time, but it seems like now I’ve just evolved into a blonde and nothing else feels right.

The “more serious” bun (or maybe the DGF bun) is basically what I do whenever my hair isn’t down (or in a braid). I love your loose side bun!

Yeah, I often use buns or braids as a way to make my hair wavy for the next time I wear it down. It looks so much more interesting than just straight/frizzy, lol.

Sometimes I guess I do it wrong, and I wind up with huge kinks instead of even waves.. does that ever happen to you or is it just me?

      1. Kelley says:

Oh yeah, that totally happens to me. Not as much now that I only have this little chunk of hair, though. I guess there’s less to mess up?

I have to see that I have seen very few women pull the side shave of nicely. You do it very well. My coworker has a very nice side shave, too.

Thanks! I like it quite a bit, I think it makes it look like my hair has some sort of style when I don’t fix it up.
